Law Day 2026 theme announced

The American Bar Association has announced that the 2026 Law Day theme will be The Rule of Law and the American Dream:

The 2026 Law Day theme is “The Rule of Law and the American Dream.” The rule of law—the idea that no person is above the law—is what ensures the rights of the people to live their lives as freely as possible and to pursue their dreams. The ABA encourages all Americans to recognize Law Day on May 1, 2026, and to reflect on how the rule of law ensures all Americans have the ability to fulfill their dreams.

Law Day is an annual commemoration held on May 1st to celebrate the rule of law and cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal system.

Law Day 2025 theme announced

The American Bar Association has announced that the 2025 Law Day theme will be The Constitution's Promise: Out of Many, One:

The Constitution enshrines our collective responsibility to one another, and the 2025 Law Day theme urges us to take pride in a Constitution that bridges our differences to bring us together as a united nation. Our civic lives tie us together as one “We,” whether through legislative efforts that serve the common good, through military service, or by working together, every day, to fulfill the promise of E pluribus unum, or “Out of many, one.”

Law Day is an annual commemoration held on May 1st to celebrate the rule of law and cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal system.

Schuyler County Commemorates May 1 as “Law Day”

Law Day is Wednesday (May 1) and the Schuyler County Legislature has recognized as the Law Day 2024 theme, “Voices of Democracy.”

The legislature passed a resolution at its April 8, 2024 meeting, recognizing “Law Day” as an occasion of public acknowledgement of our Nation’s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law.

The resolution was submitted to the legislature by Schuyler County Attorney Steven Getman.

“In 2024, the United States will hold its 60th presidential election, together with many federal, state and local elections,” Getman wrote. “The ‘Voices of Democracy’ Law Day theme encourages Americans to participate in the 2024 elections by deepening their understanding of the electoral process; discussing issues in honest and civil ways; turning out to vote; and, finally, helping to move the country forward after free and fair elections.”

In passing the resolution, the legislature called upon all Schuyler County residents “to observe this day by lifting their voices to maintain our system of laws and to ensure that our republic endures through free and fair elections.”

The measure was introduced by Legislator Gary Gray (R- District VIII) and seconded by Legislator Michael Lausell (D-District III). It was supported unanimously by the members present.

May 1, 2024 is the 66th Law Day. In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Law Day Proclamation to mark our nation’s commitment to the rule of law. Each year the American Bar Association selects an annual theme for Law Day.

New York Courts Launch Law Day Art Contest

NEWS ADVISORY:

Law Day is commemorated annually on May 1st to highlight the rule of law and the freedoms that Americans hold dear. In celebration of Law Day 2024, the Unified Court System’s Office for Justice Initiatives–Division of Access to Justice has partnered with the Historical Society of the New York Courts to invite high school students statewide to participate in an art contest inspired by the American Bar Association’s 2024 Law Day theme, “Voices of Democracy.” This year’s Law Day theme underscores the importance of participating in elections by deepening our understanding of the elections process, discussing the issues with family, friends and others in a civil manner, and helping move the country forward after the election process.

Submissions should be original pieces of art that depict what the Law Day 2024 theme means to the artist. All submissions must be received by April 11, 2024. The winners will be announced on May 1, 2024. First, second, and third prize winners will receive monetary prizes––courtesy of the Historical Society of the New York Courts––and have their artwork featured on the court system’s website

Law Day 2024 theme announced

The American Bar Association has announced the theme for Law Day 2024, "Voices of Democracy.”

The 2024 Law Day theme “Voices of Democracy” recognizes that in democracies, the people rule.
For nearly 250 years, Americans have expressed their political views and wishes by speaking their minds and voting in elections.
In 2024, the United States will hold its 60th presidential election, and Americans will address fundamental questions about democracy and the rule of law.

Law Day 2023: “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility and Collaboration”

On Monday, March 6, at 4:00-5:00 PM ET the American Bar Assocation will be hosting the 2023 Law Day Launch program.

The program will include an introduction to the Law Day theme “Cornerstones of Democracy: Civics, Civility, and Collaboration” and new Law Day resources and activities.

Schuyler County Commemorates Saturday May 1 as “Law Day”

The Schuyler County Legislature has recognized as the Law Day 2021 theme “Advancing the Rule of Law Now.”

The legislature passed a resolution at its April 12, 2021 meeting, recognizing “Law Day” as an occasion of public acknowledgement of our Nation’s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law. The resolution was submitted to the legislature by Schuyler County Attorney Steven Getman.

“The Rule of Law rests upon the idea that no one is so important as to be above the law and conversely no one is so insignificant to be beneath the law,” Getman wrote. “The United States was founded on the principle that adherence to the Rule of Law expands, rather than limits, the opportunities for freedom.”

In passing the resolution, the legislature found that “promoting public understanding of the roots of our freedom are an important component in the civic education of the citizens of the United States, the State of New York and the County of Schuyler.”

The American Bar Association selects an annual theme for each Law Day. Law Day is an annual commemoration first held in 1957 when the American Bar Association envisioned a special national day to mark our nation’s commitment to the rule of law. The following year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Law Day Proclamation. Law Day was made official in 1961 when Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day.

Law Day 2021 theme announced: "Advancing the Rule of Law Now."

The American Bar Association has announced that the theme for Law Day 2021 is "Advancing the Rule of Law Now."

"The rule of law is the bedrock of American rights and liberties—in times of calm and unrest alike," the organization noted. "The 2021 Law Day theme—Advancing the Rule of Law, Now—reminds all of us that we the people share the responsibility to promote the rule of law, defend liberty, and pursue justice."

The Rule of Law rests upon the idea that no person is so important as to be above the law and conversely no person is so insignificant to be beneath the law. The United States was founded on the principle that voluntary adherence to the Rule of Law expands, rather than limits, the opportunities for freedom.

The United States Congress has statutorily designated May 1 as the annual day for commemoration of Law Day. Law Day is held to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession.

Law Day 2020 theme announced: “Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100.”

The American Bar Association has announced the 2020 theme for Law Day is "Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy. The 19th Amendment at 100":

In 2019-2020, the United States is commemorating the centennial of the transformative constitutional amendment that guaranteed the right of citizens to vote would not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex. American women fought for, and won, the vote through their voice and action.
The women’s suffrage movement forever changed America, expanding representative democracy and inspiring other popular movements for constitutional change and reform. Yet, honest reflection on the suffrage movement reveals complexity and tensions over race and class that remain part of the ongoing story of the Nineteenth Amendment and its legacies.
Law Day is held on May 1st every year to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession.

Schuyler County Commemorates May 1 as “Law Day”: Law Day 2019 Will Focus on Free Speech, Free Press.

Watkins Glen, New York—The Schuyler County Legislature has recognized as the Law Day 2019 theme “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society.”

The legislature passed a resolution at its April 8, 2019 meeting, recognizing “Law Day” as an occasion of public acknowledgement of our Nation’s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law. The resolution was submitted to the legislature by Schuyler County Attorney Steven Getman.

“The First Amendment to the United States Constitution protects the right to free speech and a free press, along with other rights that recognize the ability of persons to think and communicate how they wish without fear of punishment or oppression,” Getman wrote.

New web platform helps users research meanings of words used in Constitution, Supreme Court opinions

A web platform that provides law-related historic linguistics information was announced recently:

Corpus linguistics involves the use of naturally occurring language in large collections of texts—called corpora—to help determine the meanings of words and phrases, according to a press release about the platform.
The unveiling of the Law and Corpus Linguistics Technology Platform, which is free to use, ties in with Constitution Day, the anniversary of the document’s ratification.
The Corpus of Founding Era American English, which allows users to examine how words from the Constitution were used from 1750 to 1799, is searchable on the platform; as is the Corpus of Early Modern English, which has more than 40,000 texts from 1485 to 1800; and the Corpus of the U.S. Supreme Court, which has more than 32,000 court documents. BYU Dean D. Gordon Smith said in the release that this is “the first corpora featuring all United States Supreme Court rulings (up to the most recent term).”
Georgetown University law professor Lawrence Solum said the new corpora will be helpful to those who want to research the meaning of the Constitution. “The method of corpus linguistics … provides an important tool for the recovery of the original public meaning of the constitutional text.”

The legislature passed a resolution at its April 9, 2018 meeting, recognizing “Law Day” as an occasion of public acknowledgement of our Nation’s heritage of justice, liberty, and equality under the law. The resolution was submitted to the legislature by Schuyler County Attorney Steven Getman.

“The U.S. Constitution established a system of government with distinct and independent branches—legislative, executive, and judicial—and it gave Congress, the Presidency, and a Supreme Court separate and distinct powers, so that these three separate branches share power and serve as checks on the powers of the others,” Getman wrote.

Law Day 2018 Theme Announced

The American Bar Association has announced the theme for Law Day 2018, "Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom."

The U.S. Constitution designated a system of government with distinct, independent branches – legislative, executive, and judicial – and outlines how they interact. Congress, the Presidency, and the Supreme Court share power and serve as a check on the powers of the others, providing a framework for freedom.

N.Y. State Bar launches NY.FreeLegalAnswers.org

The New York State Bar Association will soon be participating in the ABA Free Legal Answers project.

This project will provide an online platform for New York attorneys to provide limited scope legal advice to low income New Yorkers.

All low income persons who meet the project’s eligibility standards may utilize this service in New York.

Law Day 2017 Theme Announced

The American Bar Association has announced the theme for Law Day 2017, which is “The Fourteenth Amendment: Transforming American Democracy.”

As our nation approaches the 150th anniversary of the Fourteenth Amendment, the theme explores how the Citizenship, Due Process and Equal Protection clauses of this amendment served as the cornerstone of civil rights legislation, the foundation for court decisions protecting fundamental rights, and a source of inspiration for those who advocate for equal justice under law.

The American Bar Association: Engaging Future Lawyers

The ABA Young Lawyers Division has partnered with the Texas Young Lawyers Association to expand the What Do Lawyers Do program into a national resource.

What Do Lawyers Do? is an interactive web-based is designed to educate high school and college students about how to become a lawyer.
The project focuses on preparation for law school, the law school experience, and different career paths for law school graduates.
Among its many goals, the project seeks to encourage a discussion about the different aspects of a legal education and the seemingly endless options open to those interested in pursuing a legal education.
Students will have a newfound understanding of the important roles that lawyers play in society, and that a legal education and a legal career are well within the reach of anyone willing to put in the time and effort to succeed
